A few words from coach Joe

Hey folks just wanted to drop a quick line to you all to discuss the
progress of our team. We have continued to improve in all aspects of
our game. The kids seem to be starting to buy into our systems and
executing them at a higher level than before. It's a tough hill to
climb sometimes, especially for teams that are not used to winning (difficulty learning how to win, playing with a lead etc.). We, the coaching staff, are sensing that the team is beginning to overcome this as they continue to learn to compete at a higher level. They are starting to believe that they are a good team and are playing with a great deal of confidence and urgency. We are both happy and proud of the strides this team has taken since August and hope that everyone will continue to drive, and work hard towards playing at this level and striving to get to the next level.

This is a "process" and a long season. As long as
we keep our focus on the main things, development, learning,
competing and having fun doing it, we should continue to see this upward climb.

As we enter the new year and then the home stretch to the
playdowns, we must get "geared up" while continuing to focus on our goals, both individual and team, and continue to climb those hills to get to the level we will need to be at for success in the Playdowns.

We as a coaching staff are really enjoying coaching this group
of kids and hope that you are all very satisfied with the team's
performance and development so far.

While we remain very proud of them, we will continue to push them along to higher levels and continued successes.

All the best, (coach Joe)

Merry Christmas Storm Fans

The team finished the pre-Christmas portion of the season with wins against St. Catherines and Grey Bruce sandwiching a tough lose to the strong Welland Tigers.

Yesterday, the squad suited up against the parents. Unlike past matches against the parents, this was a close, competitive game until the very end. The grown ups were decisively weaker in team speed, defensive play and transition. In spite of this, we rallied and edged the "kids" (by my count).

In the previous years, the grown ups used size, speed and team play to their advantage and "toyed" with the team. These days have clearly come to an end. I suspect the team will have their way with the dads in the future.

I will try to catch up with the photos over the next week or so.

Merry Christmas to all, Ken

Nutrition and Hockey Performance, Does Diet make a Difference?
Kindly supplied by Heidi Smith, Sport Dietitian, from “Nutrition for the Long Run”, available from the Health and Performance Centre, University of Guelph (cost $15 taxes included) or go online to www.heidismithnutrition.com

Hockey is a fast and demanding sport requiring proper fueling to reach peak performance. Repeated bouts of high intensity, anaerobic shifts result in rapid decline of glycogen stores. Glycogen is the storage form of carbohydrate. It takes 24-48 hours to fully replenish our limited stores after intense exercise. Without glycogen for energy, your performance will suffer. A recovery eating plan is essential to speed glycogen recovery before playing again the next day.

Therefore the hockey player’s diet must continually replenish carbohydrate stores. Carbohydrate loading in the days before a tournament and in between games has been shown to increase: distance skated, number of shifts skated, amount of time skated within shifts and skating speed.

What to eat the day before a tournament?

The day before: Try to graze on high carbohydrate foods throughout the day. Eat every 3-4 hours throughout the day. Choose low fat, moderate protein, high carbohydrate foods. Drink lots of fluids because every gram of glycogen is stored with 3 grams of water.

For the drive to the tournament: pack foods such as Fruit, trail mix, yogurt, sandwiches, sport drinks, juice boxes, sport bars etc… OR if you stop to eat go for foods such as Subway (low fat toppings) or Wendy’s grilled chicken baked potato (See section on Eating Out).

Dinner the night before: Don’t overstuff yourself. You want fast digestion so you feel light and fast the next day.

Choose (higher carbohydrate):
Pasta, bread and salad (light on the cheese, no cream sauces)
Grilled Chicken, rice and veggies
Clubhouse sandwich with salad (hold the mayo and fries until after the tournament)
Pizza with veggies and chicken toppings

Avoid (higher fat choices):
Pizza with sausage and pepperoni
Lasagna (too much fat)
Large steaks
Chicken wings
Caesar salad
Alcohol (slows glycogen storage)

What to eat when eating out? (Restaurants)

Look for key words that describe low or high fat foods
Words to describe:

Low fat: grilled, steamed, baked, broiled, boiled, marinara, poached
High fat: frying, sautéing, au gratin, alfredo, cream, butter

Fast Foods
- Plan meals that are less than20 g of fat & snacks less than 10 g of fat.
- Choose a grilled chicken sandwich instead of high fat burger.
- Order beverages that are caffeine free ie: juice, water, clear pop, caffeine free tea or milk
- Control portion sizes by splitting your meal with others and avoiding “super sizing” your meals
- Try to add carbohydrates: baked potatoes, salads, juice, milk or frozen yogurt
- Subs shops order high carbohydrate, low fat options
- watch out for higher fats from cheese, sauces and mayo
- Check out the grocery store before, during, or after a trip. Pick up fresh fruits, dried fruit, chopped vegetables, bagels, soynuts, granola bars, low fat cheese, yogurt

What to eat the morning before the game:
 Try to eat 2-3 hours before the game
 Choose high carbohydrate, moderate protein, low fat
 Higher fat items take longer to digest and therefore can feel heavy in your stomach. We want to avoid foods that take longer to digest. We want quick energy the day of the game.
 Eat foods you are used to eating. Do Not try anything new the day of the game!

Ideal meals before the game:
Cereal, juice, oatmeal (any hot cereal), milk, fruit, toast (get butter on the side), peanut butter, poached/hardboiled eggs, scrambled eggs (ask for no oil on the grill if possible), ask for egg beaters (some hotels carry this), egg white omelets, bagels, light cream cheese, ham instead of bacon, pancakes/French toast (easy on the butter and syrup).

Avoid (high protein, high fat):
Cheese omelets, sausage, home fries, muffins (usually high in fat and sugar), sugary cereals, too much coffee (can cause GI upset).

Eating between games is critical for recovery!!

Remember that you are already maxing out your glycogen stores. If you eat within 15 minutes of the game you can double your speed of glycogen recovery (which is slow to begin with). Maximizing your energy stores means you’ll be ready for your next game!

 Choose foods that are high in carbohydrate and moderate protein

Immediately following a game: (within 15 minutes)
Chocolate milk Sport drink – Gatorade, Power Aide
Fruit Juice Fruit – banana, oranges, apples
Yogurt Sport bar
Peanut butter & Jam Sandwich

Between games:
Munch on high carbohydrate, moderate protein, low fat foods to satisfy your hunger. Think of it as small frequent meals and snacks rather than one big meal. Follow the pre-exercise guidelines according to the time of your next game:

Hydration

Water and Hydration
Your body is made up of 65-75 % water
Water has many important functions in your body including:
· Helps carry oxygen and nutrients to working muscles and remove

..wastes
· Sweat production that helps body temperature regulation
· Important in maintaining normal blood pressure and heart rate
· Helps with organ cushioning and joint lubrication

Dehydration: The Invisible Opponent
Dehydration (for our purposes) is a state that occurs when an athlete loses more fluids than he/she takes in. Under normal conditions, our bodies can tolerate minor degrees of dehydration, rehydrating later, when water is more available. The trouble is that even these minor degrees of water deficits can have significant effects on athletic performance.

Signs of dehydration
· Increased body temperature
· Rapid heart beat (loss of 2 lbs of fluid increases heart rate by 8

...beats/minute)
· Decreased concentration
· Cramping, nausea, headaches
· Impaired performance - a1 to 2% dehydration can cause up to a10 % reduction in
...performance! (some recent studies dispute these figures)

The Thirst reflex is a delayed reaction to dehydration, often not occurring until we are significantly dehydrated. This means that by the time you are thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated!

Therefore, you must “Think to Drink!”

Before Games: Drink 2 cups (a 500 ml bottle) of fluid, preferably water, 1 to 2 hours before game time. Your kidney will help eliminate any excessive above what your body needs.

During Games: Try to drink frequently during the game, small sips between shifts rather than gulping when you feel thirsty. Drinks need to be dilute: water is still probably the best to drink while playing hockey. If using a sports drink, use no more than 6-8% carbohydrate (Gatorade: 6%, Eload: 6%, Powerade: 8%).

After the Game: Drink to replenish body water stores and help with the preparation necessary for future practice/competition. Choose whatever works for you. There is evidence that athletes will drink more readily if they like the taste of the drink. There is also evidence that consuming carbohydrates, with water, helps speed up water absorption as well as helping to restore depleted body supplies of carbohydrate.

Fuel and Refuelling
Studies suggest that athletes who hydrate with sports drinks outperform athletes who hydrate with just water in a number of key performance measures, including the ability to exercise longer before succumbing to fatigue, the ability to maintain a faster sprint speed in the second half of a competition, and the ability to exhibit higher explosive power both overall and later in exercise.

Just a thought… A recent study looked at the effectiveness of various sports drinks and conclude that chocolate milk, immediately after exercise, is just as good

Much of this information has been obtained from Gatorade’s “Hydration” web site
http://www.gatorade.com/hydration/ and from an excellent book by Heidi Smith (Sports Nutritionist) “Nutrition for the Long Run”. Available from the Health and Performance Centre or online www.heidismithnutrition.com.

Mouthguards

As player speed and strength increase, it becomes increasingly important that all protective equipment be of good quality and fit properly. A proper fitting, well maintained mouthguard will help to reduce the risk of injury to teeth and structures around the mouth as well as helping to reduce the risk/severity of concussions.

There are three basic types of mouth guards: stock (off the shelf) pieces, “boil and bite” mouthguards and dental, custom mouthguards. A good, easy to understand discussion of these is found at the Animated-Teeth.com site
-site

While the relative merits of the different types of guards can be argued, it is generally thought that custom fitted guards offer the best level of protection. These mouthguards also tend to be worn correctly as opposed to becoming a “chewing device” (as is evident in some of the pictures).

The major knock against custom mouthguards is the cost. Dr. Jim Fox has generously offered to fit team members for mouth guards (and will deliver the mouthguard to the rink!). Parents can call Dr. Fox’s office at 519-837-0305 and speak to either Karen or Lynn. They will try to arrange a time that is convenient for a fitting.

This is a free service, kindly offered by Dr. Fox, that may well reduce the risk of serious injury. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this.

Count Down to Season Opener vs Halton

Co-op Cup photos have just been added.

Blog style and colour have been changed to make for easier reading.

The team's preparation for meaningful game action continues. Thanks to manager Art, we now have:
..........September's schedule -schedule
..........Our season (games) schedule -schedule
..........Our Anticipated Tournaments -list
These files have been posted under "Latest Schedule Links" under a new heading on the right side of the page titled "Important Links".

The response to the new jerseys has been quite positive. The "big club", the junior A Storm, will debut their jerseys at the team's home opener on September 21st. I believe we will be the first Junior Storm club to wear the new jerseys in game action (should make for some interesting photos!). I would encourage folks to explore the Co-op cup links on the right side. It seems that a strong collection of teams will be competing this year.

September 17th is our season opener vs. Halton Hills. We have had very limited success against this team in the past. With our new approach and players, I believe this year will be a different story!

The Calm Before The Storm

Hi all

We're now in the midst of a lull, between the Wonderland tournament and the Co-op Cup and before the season actually starts. Coach Joe welcomes this break as the team can practice and work on systems.

I've had some time to update the blog page content and appearance. These changes include:

- Strathroy photos * Photos *
- Links for the upcoming tournament Co-op Cup
- A viewer poll (bottom of the page)

I will continue to tinker with the site until I get a layout that I am satisfied with.

Bye for now,

Ken

First Blog Entry

Hi all. Welcome to the first official post to my minor hockey web blog. This is my first attempt at blogging and I'm sure that things will run smoother and have a more professional look as the season goes on and as I gain more experience with this blogging concept.
.
The Mission of the Guelph Junior Storm Hockey Blog
This blog is meant to be a vehicle for sharing information of a positive nature, principally photographs. I hope to involve a variety of people as contributors. Anybody interested in contributing should contact me. All posts will be edited. I remain determined not to let this blog become a vehicle for discussing controversial issues or for second guessing the coaching staff. Please bring it to my attention if I start to stray from these ideals.
.
Strong Showing in Wonderland
Competing under the name Guelph Pro Hockey, the core group that will make up this year's Major PeeWee AAA team competed in the CCHA Wonderland Tune Up tornament (http://www.cchasports.com/asp/results.asp). This year's team features a number of new additions and a new coaching staff. A warm welcome to all!
The team competed hard and fared well. Guelph went 3 and 0 in the qualifying round defeating the Mississauga Rebels (6th in the GTHL last year!) in the process.
Sunday morning, the Rebels rebounded, defeating Guelph 3 to 1 in a closely contested match. The Rebels then went on to defeat the Toronto Rifles (Markham Majors), another strong GTHL team, 5 to 1 in the final and to win the tournament (final results - http://www.cchasports.com/2007PCWResults-final.htm ). There is a good chance we will see these teams again as the year progresses.
As things transpired, I was not required on the bench and able to take a number of photographs.
.
Photos from Wonderland
For those interested, these can be viewed at the link - http://photobug-guelph.smugmug.com/gallery/3344076 The photo gallery should play as a slideshow. Comments are welcomed. As the season unfolds, I will try to include shots of all players.
Congratulations to the team for the strong showing! We are looking forward to the upcoming season.
